Anne Young passed away on 11 March 2021, in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh after a long illness. She was born in 1951 in Crossmaglen, County Armagh. As a young woman, she played Camogie for the Armagh and Monaghan County teams and later on for Queen’s. She studied at Queen’s University in Belfast from 1971 to 1974. For her final year she attended the University of Edinburgh where she graduated with a BSc in Pure Maths and Statistics.
Initially, she taught at the Trinity Academy in Edinburgh. After some years there, she moved on to become a Tax Inspector with the Inland Revenue. Her next step was to move to Scottish Widows where she became their Tax Expert. In this role she found her special niche. This involved advising financial advisors inside Scottish Widows itself and also travelling around the UK giving presentations on various aspects of tax to other financial advisors. Her unique way of making these complicated, often boring, topics come to life, resulted in a great demand for her presence at the many financial roadshows. With her innate gift of story-telling, her presentations became famous for their clarity, humour, and relevance.
Anne was happily married to John Young who worked in the Legal Profession. Some years before his early death in 1997, he was appointed Sheriff. Throughout the ups and downs of her declining health, Anne, with her wonderful smile and fighting spirit, never stopped working. Tributes have poured in from all those who knew her, both in her personal and working life. She was a unique and very special person. We will all miss her.
