IN CONVERSATION WITH QUEEN'S CHANCELLOR, SECRETARY HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON  Capitol Building in Washington DC at dusk, with purple shades in sky

31 March 2021

Queen’s University Belfast, in partnership with the UCL Centre on US Politics, and with support from the US Department of State, is to host an online conversation with the University’s Chancellor, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The US Consul General in Belfast, Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau, will chat with Secretary Clinton in an event that is to be broadcast on the University website on Thursday April 15 at 5pm.

Entitled ‘Beyond Decision 2020’, Secretary Clinton will reflect on the challenges facing the new Biden administration, consider America’s future relationship with Northern Ireland and the broader UK, and share her thoughts on the role of women in politics today.

This will be a unique opportunity to hear from the former US Secretary of State, New York Senator and First Lady who became the University’s 11th and first female Chancellor in January 2020.

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Secretary Clinton, widely acknowledged for her long-standing commitment to peace, stability and economic regeneration in Northern Ireland, is an internationally recognised public servant. She is a strong advocate for Northern Ireland and an inspirational role model for the Queen’s community.

In October 2018, she received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University for her ‘contribution to public service and to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland’.

As Chancellor of Queen’s Secretary Clinton fulfils three main roles – a ceremonial one which (under non-COVID-19 circumstances) involves presiding at degree congregations; an ambassadorial role, where the Chancellor helps to ‘open doors’ for the University as it seeks to fulfil its mission; and finally as an advisor, available to the Vice-Chancellor and senior management as a ‘sounding board’ and to provide counsel and guidance.

Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau

Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau became US Consul General in Belfast in September 2018.

Ms Trudeau’s most recent assignment was Lahore, Pakistan, where she served as the US Consul General. Prior to her role in Pakistan, she served as the Department of State’s Director for Press Operations and as a Department spokesperson in Washington, D.C.

Ms Trudeau’s other assignments include serving as the Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, Belgium; a seconded senior advisor and chief of staff to the Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy on NATO’s International Staff, also in Brussels; and spokesperson and press attaché at the U.S. Mission to South Africa in Pretoria, South Africa. She also served in Tunis, Tunisia, and Nairobi, Kenya.
