OPT IN FOR A CHANCE TO WIN!

Throughout the month of May we offered Queen’s alumni around the world a chance to win a luxury SUKI Tea Makers Gift Set – simply by ‘opting in’ to receive regular emails from Queen’s.

The lucky prize winner will be advised shortly but in the meantime you can find out more about our generous sponsor here. The randomly selected winner of the previous month’s prize was: Conor Graham, BA Criminology (2015) from County Down. Well done Conor.

The June winner will receive a bespoke piece of (unframed) art designed on the theme of Northern Ireland using County Tyrone Bog Oak (some of which is over 5,000 years old) and other materials by Derry-based artist Maureen Mc Ghee.

Maureen combines wood, silver and patinated metals to create modern unique jewellery, wall designs and sculptural pieces. She originally attended Grennan Mill Craft School in Thomastown, County Kilkenny before going on to study 3D Design at Ulster University, specialising in jewellery. It was at this point that Maureen became interested in combining wood and metal, something she has continued doing in her current work.

All her work carries some form of symbolism either based on the person or family it is being made for, or patterns carried within the wood as they emerge through cutting and shaping.

The sense of time, textures and colours within Irish bog woods and bog oak make them favourites of Maureen’s. According to her, it is the age of the Bog Oak that makes each creative piece so precious.

Maureen said: "I love working with natural wood and enhancing each piece of wood’s beautiful qualities. Each piece is therefore unique, not to be repeated.”
