Thomas Leslie Brown, BSc 1976 (died 29 June 2019, aged 66)

Leslie Brown, BSc 1976, a Queen’s Architecture graduate, died suddenly on June 29 2019, aged 66.

Leslie's successful career was spent for many years as a talented and creative architect, who, on achieving his BSc with a 2.1 in Architecture and Diploma in Advanced Architectural Studies from Queen's, worked professionally for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

His work can be seen in many housing developments all over Belfast and its suburbs. But his influence went beyond; he was involved on the design of sections of the Thames Flood Barrier in London, while seconded to the Greater London Council, where he worked for about six months.  

Later, he became a board member of the Down Rural Area Partnership, assessing applications and approving grants for worthy construction projects.

Throughout his life, Leslie was a keen and talented gardener and in the past couple of years, after buying a holiday home in Donaghadee, he devoted a great deal of time turning something of a mess into a beautiful and inspiring garden, where he enjoyed spending many hours. His gardening interest extended to being involved in the work of the Botanical Gardens Society.

He not only enjoyed visiting National Trust houses and gardens but went further by working as a volunteer at Castleward, where he went out of his way to know as much as possible to help visitors.

Volunteering was a major part of his later life, working at the MAC in Belfast and latterly in a charity shop in South Belfast. This was all part of his great desire to help others, which he did relentlessly and without hesitation.

Leslie is survived by his sisters, Jennifer and Marion, their respective families and by several other family members.
