UFU RAISES SUBSTANTIAL FUNDS FOR QUEEN'S CANCER RESEARCH

The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has announced that £10,000 was raised for the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research at Queen’s during Ivor Ferguson’s term as UFU president.

Various events were held, particularly throughout 2019, contributing to this total including RUAS Balmoral show, the UFU annual dinner and UFU group fundraising.

Mr Ferguson (pictured left above) acknowledged the incredible efforts and generosity of UFU members and staff who came together to help raise this substantial sum of money for his chosen charity.

Thanking those who supported his selected charity Mr Ferguson said:

“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraising for their kind donations and for showing their support to a charity that is continuing incredible research here in Northern Ireland (NI).

“I, like many families across NI, have lost someone to this awful disease and it was important for me that we picked a charity close to home.

“The money raised and donated to Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research will support their work to understand the biology of cancer, improve treatments and patient outcomes, and train the next generation of clinicians and scientists.

“We are proud to be able to support the work of this fantastic Centre and with fundraising interrupted this year due to COVID-19, these funds will be more needed than ever,” said Mr Ferguson.

Speaking on behalf of the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, director Professor Chris Scott (above right) added:

“Researchers for Cancer Research at Queen's are finding new ways to advance and tackle cancer care by taking the lead in personalised treatment.

“We were delighted to be given the financial support of the UFU and its members’ which has helped us to create awareness of our lifesaving research and accelerate our research which is integral to the overall strategy for Northern Ireland in developing better outcomes for cancer patients.” 

The Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research Centre was formerly known as the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology and was renamed in January 2020 in honour of the University’s former Vice-Chancellor who died in 2017.

Commenting on the success of this year’s UFU President’s Charity appeal Teresa Sloan, Head of Health Fundraising in the Development and Alumni Relations Office at Queen’s, said:

“I am delighted with the huge generosity of the UFU’s members during what has been an incredibly challenging year. The money raised will make a significant contribution to funding local research, clinical trials, staff and equipment at the Centre here at Queen’s.

“We are very proud of our world-class research at the University which improves outcomes and quality of life for patients in Northern Ireland and beyond.”
