QUEEN’S MUSIC GRADUATE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE THAT HELPS STUDENTS FIND THEIR DREAM JOB ROLES

A young Queen’s graduate has made the most of her time during lockdown by setting up a podcast that helps students and graduates to reach their career goals.

‘Working It: A Careers Podcast’ is a free resource that was founded and hosted by Vanessa McGeehan, BMus (2018). Each week Vanessa interviews guests from a range of different careers to discuss their journeys towards their current professions and she shares their advice and tips for those students who are interested in going down a similar career route.

So far, Vanessa has interviewed radio presenter Cate Conway from U105, Jennifer Neff and Leanne Monk from the start-up company Elemental, and many more.

After graduating with a music degree from Queen’s, Vanessa wasn’t sure of the next steps on her career journey. After spending the summer volunteering with the Millennium Forum Theatre & Conference she was offered a marketing internship. Since then Vanessa has spent her free time completing marketing courses and working towards a career as a Commercial Executive.

This experience gave her the motivation she needed to start her podcast and help others along their career journey.

Vanessa McGeehan, Working It founder and host, said:

“After leaving University I wasn’t sure how to work towards a career in the creative industry. During my marketing internship, it introduced me to a new profession that I never knew I could work in.

“There are many students and graduates, like me, who aren’t aware of the different careers that are available to them after leaving education. This encouraged me to create ‘Working It’ and show students the different career routes available to them after leaving school or university.”

The ‘Working It: A Careers Podcast’ website will be launched at the end of this month where you can listen to the podcast episodes alongside amazing free resources that can help you to prepare for the world of work.

Vanessa plans to release more episodes and to continue to showcase the different career paths available to students and graduates.
