City Event: What it takes to succeed in finance

8 October 2013

Almost 100 current undergraduates enjoyed a unique opportunity to hear from an expert panel of successful Queen's graduates on how to get ahead in the world of finance.

The five graduates on the panel all work in London and Belfast and were chaired by Professor John Turner from Queen’s University Management School (QUMS). Panellists were;

Áine Black (BSc Finance 2007), Associate Director, Barclays Corporate BankingPanelists pictures with Professor John Turner, QUMS
Ben Canning (BSc Accounting 2000), Managing Director, BNP Paribas
Nick Norris (BSc Finance 2005), Energy arbitrage and market making, formerly employed with Hess Energy Trading Co
Peter Jameson (BSc Accounting 1999), Managing Director, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Gerry McGinn (BA French 1979), Managing Director, First Trust Bank

The panellist’s roles included corporate finance, capital markets and energy trading. They were able to provide the students with a real insight into the variety of roles available as well as giving tips for success on how to make the most out of their time at Queen’s to improve their prospects.

After the panel discussion both students and alumni participated in a lively Q&A session which was then followed by a networking opportunity.

The event, which was held at Riddel Hall, was organised by the Development and Alumni Relations Office in collaboration with Careers, Employability and Skills and QUMS. The evening proved to be a huge success with several students making useful links with the panel members and enjoying the chance to pick up some one-to-one advice.
