Young City Leaders Society 

Over 30 City Scholarship participants were presented with certificates at a special ceremony at Queen’s in early November, which also saw the launch of a vibrant new student society aimed at supporting these future leaders as they progress through University.

In June 2013, 33 first year undergraduates were awarded scholarships in leading companies in London (19), New York (7) and Dublin (7) as part of the University’s City Scholarship Programmes. Scholarships include a financial award, practical support and advice, tailored networking and professional development events, and an opportunity to access the City Leadership Group.

Speaking at the presentation and launch, Councillor Ó Muilleoir said: “Queen’s City Scholarship Programme and Queen’s Young City Leaders Society, offers students a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the world’s leading business people throughout their time at University, giving them an edge when they begin their careers internationally”.

Congratulating members of the new group, Professor Tony Gallagher, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Planning, Staffing and External Relations at Queen's, said: “The Queen’s Young City Leaders Society is a unique club open to young developing professionals and emerging philanthropists at Queen’s, which will help cultivate and support the next generation of business leaders.

“Through the support of alumni and friends Queen’s has successfully established City Scholarship Programmes in three of the world’s most vibrant cities – New York, London and Dublin – primarily in financial services and law. The students receiving certificates today, inaugural members of the Young City Leaders Society, have had privileged access to – and a chance to learn first-hand from – some of the University’s most prominent business alumni, both locally and outside Northern Ireland.”

Welcoming the launch of the group, a founding member of the City Scholarship Programme, Mr Sean Hunt (Managing Director at TFC Investment Management, London), said: “The Young City Leaders Society will complement the University’s City Scholarship Programmes and will undoubtedly strengthen each student’s ability to compete for the most highly sought after placements and graduate jobs.  The Society will give undergraduates, who are the University alumni of the future, a vehicle for reciprocating the benefit they have received and a platform for helping other students."

Initially set up in London in 2011, the City Scholarship Programme has trebled from 11 students in 2012 to 33 in 2013 in London, New York and Dublin. In addition, plans are now underway to develop it in other disciplines such as engineering and technology and in other areas like the West Coast of the US.
