Agri expert wins Graduate Volunteer Award

Dr Clive Black, a 1985 BSSc graduate in Human Geography and 1991 PhD, is Head of Research at Shore Capital Stockbrokers. After submission of Norma Sinte, Director of Development at Queen's, presents Dr Clive Black with the 2013 Graduate Volunteer of the year Awardhis thesis on the Northern Ireland food industry he worked in London for the National Farmers' Union for five years and then joined Northern Foods plc, before moving into stockbroking research.

Clive is an active member of Queen’s City Leadership Group, which organises and funds internships for top Queen’s students in leading London city firms in both Liverpool and Edinburgh where Shore also have offices.

Through Shore Capital, he has funded four City Scholarships – enabling Queen’s students to find out at firsthand how the financial world ticks as part of an intensive week-long placement.  In addition to helping fund the initiative, Clive generously gives his personal support and advice to the students, sharing with them a wealth of knowledge of the world of business.                   

A strong supporter of Queen’s Chief Executives’ Club – the University’s direct link with local captains of industry – Clive was also a keynote speaker at a Riddel Hall Founders’ Club event last November. The Founders’ Club is a select group of companies from across Northern Ireland which has donated more than £1.5m to the new hub for business at Riddel.

In March, he was instrumental in securing the participation of Tesco CEO Philip Clarke at the opening of the University’s £33m Institute of Global Food Security

Speaking at the Awards evening, Norma Sinte, Director of Development and Alumni Relations (pictured above with Dr Black), said: “I am personally delighted that Clive’s commitment to Queen’s has been acknowledged. For his active and direct support of current students and for helping to put Queen’s - and the Northern Ireland agri-food sector -  on the map, Clive is a worthy recipient of this the inaugural Graduate Volunteer of the Year Award.”
