Saying 'Thanks'
On a beautiful Saturday in June more than 100 of Queen’s most generous donors and living legators came together as part of the annual Donor ‘Thank You’ Day.
In the relaxed environs of the quad friends and benefactors of the University mingled with fellow donors and staff to the accompaniment of a student string quartet. The occasion celebrates the University’s most loyal donors and gives those present an opportunity to hear first-hand where their gifts have been used.
Before formalities got underway, guests were shown a specially commissioned four minute video (which can be viewed here) featuring undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic staff who had benefitted directly from donor philanthropy in the past year.
In recognising the immense contribution of all donors to the University but in particular those present, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Tony Gallagher highlighted the importance of on-going support in enabling the University to reach its goals. He outlined the progress of the Queen’s ‘Beyond’ Campaign, which has already raised over £45m towards its overall fundraising target of £140m and shared some of the University’s recent success stories.
The BBC’s Mark Simpson (a Queen’s 1989 History & Politics graduate) then chaired a panel discussion on the impact of philanthropy on the University. Among those taking part were Leslie Morrison (Patron of The Lanyon Society of living legacy donors), Rosemary Carson (travel award funder in the School of Nursing and Midwifery), Professor Joe O’Sullivan (who leads a clinical research programme in prostate cancer and radiotherapy in CCRCB - the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology) and Christopher Mallon, a James MacQuitty Law Scholar currently studying for an LLM in Corporate Governance.
The special event concluded with a delicious afternoon tea in the Great Hall when guests had a further chance to catch up with old friends.
Queen’s Donor ‘Thank You’ Day came at end of Donor Pin Week, a national initiative which recognises and celebrates the enormous impact that philanthropic donations and gifts have on universities each year.
