Award for Queen's Chancellor

         

Queen's Chancellor, Dr Tom Moran, was one of 10 people honoured by Irish President, Michael D Higgins, in early December. Dr Moran received a Distinguished Service Award for his  work on Peace, Reconciliation and Development. More>>>

Golfer Paul McGinley joins elite 'Club'

The successful 2014 European Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley, received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s during Winter Graduation. The degree of Doctor of the University was presented in the Sir William Whitla Hall on 10 December for his distinction in sport. More>>>

Solving the missing water mystery

In a major study of the atmospheres of 10 hot Jupiter-sized exoplanets, scientists from Queen’s, with colleagues around the world,have answered an age-old mystery – why do some planets appear to have less water than might be expected? More>>>

Developing gentler ventilation

 

In a major clinical trial, Queen’s and Northern Ireland will lead a UK-wide research study with the potential to improve the lives of patients in critical care worldwide. The project aims to minimise damage to the lungs caused by mechanical ventilators. More>>>

Alumna receives British Empire Medal

Languages graduate Helen Beggs Frigieri (left) has been formally honoured for services to relations between the United Kingdom and the Vatican.

Personal Assistant to HM Ambassador to the Holy See since 2008, Ms Frigieri has lived in Italy for 30 years. More>>>

 

Graduate performs in Strictly!

Dreams have come true for Queen’s arts graduate Patrick Smyth who sang solo on three occasions in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One.

During the semi-finals a TV audience of over 10 million heard Patrick sing Too Darn Hot for Katie Derham and Anton Du Beke’s Charleston and New York, New York for Anita Rani and Gleb Savchenko, dancing the Foxtrot. More>>>

      

Taking over reins at top Irish IT firm 

A Queen’s 1989 BSc Computer Science graduate, Angela Canavan, has been appointed MD for the Civica Digital Solutions Ireland team.

Ms Canavan took up her new role in November, succeeding fellow Queen’s grad Dr Steve Brankin (BSc Electrical Engineering 1983), who had led Asidua since 2002, where they both worked before the company was bought over by Civica. More>>>

 

Review of 2015 

2015 a year to remember!

It has been another busy year at Queen's, with lots to celebrate and reflect on over the last 12 months.

Below are just some of our alumni and University highlights; for more visit our Past News 2015.

 

In January...

Queen's announced the appointment of a new Dean of the Graduate School, went to the Oscars, welcomed a £7.49m investment in Computer Science and signed a major partnership with Dubai Healthcare City to develop a new university.

 

 

In February...                 

We heard about Queen’s role in developing the  world's biggest - and most revolutionary - solar telescope, celebrated a win at the BAFTAs, and congratulated four Queen’s Young City Leaders who won the national heat of the KPMG International Case Competition (KICC)!

 

In March...

Queen's marked International Women's Day, established a Food Fortress, attended a special reception in Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and helped sunbathers avoid painful sunburn.

 

 

In April...

The University announced Dr Tom Moran as the new Chancellor,  The Gown celebrated its 60th birthday, Emer Maguire won the UK Grand Final of FameLab and researchers launched a £5m programme to improve survival rates for bowel cancer patients.

 

In May...

Professor Chris Elliott received a BBC Radio 4 ‘Food Game Changer 2015’ award, graduate Stephen Rea scooped a BAFTA and ECIT scientists were leading a €4m SAFEcrypto initiative to combat increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks.

 

In June...

Queen's said thanks to all its donors, made a major hospital superbug breakthrough, helped to land a probe on a speeding comet and had not one but two eminent graduates shortlisted for the 2015 Forward Arts Foundation Poetry Award.

 

 

In July...

Graduate Catherine O’Neill made the shortlist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year, thirteen successful individuals received honorary degrees, the new Chancellor was installed and Dental student Laura Graham was crowned First Trust Bank Queen's Student of the Year

 

 

In August...

Dr Dominique Jeannerod showed us how to spot 'whodunnit' in Agatha Christie novels, QUILL reduced carbon dioxide in natural gas, CCRCB received a £3.6m CRUK Accelerator Award and a Queen's cancer expert became Vice-President elect of the US Radiation Research Society.

In September...

Alum Professor Stephen Kingsmore established the exact cause of Elvis Presley's death, the 2015 Queen's Scholars were revealed, our students set a new world record for a bridge made from Meccano and we moved up to No.31 in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.

 

In October...

The Vice-Chancellor was honoured by Irish America, 40 years of KTP were celebrated at Queen's, grad Brian Conlon received the Innovation Founder Award at the INVENT Awards and we sent our first ladies team to the Fexco Asian Games.     

 

In November...

Two staff – both Queen's alumni – won the UK's most prestigious fellowships for physical scientists, researchers invented a porous liquid, we received Royal recognition for our fight to strengthen cyber security, and Troubles over the Bridge a memoir by honorary graduate James Ellis was launched. 

 

In December...

In addition to the main news above...our graduates gathered (twice!) in New York and met up to hear the wonderful Lassus Singers in Dublin, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnston, issued his end-of-year blog!

Irish Universities London Porterhouse gathering (13 January)

The Annual London Alumni Gathering hosted by Pan Irish Higher Education Institutions will take place on Wednesday 13 January, from 6-8pm in the Porterhouse Basement Bar, 21-22 Maiden Lane in Covent Garden, London.

Scotland Association Lecture (18 January)

The QUAS (Queen’s University Association Scotland) Annual Lecture will take place on Monday 18 January at 11.30am in the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh.  

Entitled The Highland Lady and the Great Irish Famine it will be given by Queen’s graduate Professor Enda Delaney, Chair of Modern History at Edinburgh University and will be attended by members of the Trinity College Dublin Graduates’ Association.

QWG Annual General Meeting (30 January)

The Queen's Women Graduates (QWG) AGM will take place on Saturday 30 January in the Canada Room/Council Chamber starting at 10.30am.

Scotland Association Annual Dinner (12 February)

The QUAS (Queen’s University Association Scotland) Annual Dinner will take place on Friday 12 February in the Apex Waterloo Place Hotel, Edinburgh at 7.00 for 7.30 pm.

This year’s Guest Speaker is the Most Reverend David Chillingworth, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Bishop of St Andrews.

Members + 1 guest £40; non-members £45. RSVPs to athtaylor@btinternet.com not later than 13 January.
