Donegal students to benefit from healthcare scholarship at Queen's

Thursday 12 May 2022

Applications are closing soon for a new scholarship program which will help to address a national shortage of medical practitioners and support staff by supporting students from Donegal studying at Queen’s.

The Ireland Health Care Scholarship Program will provide €25,000 (£21,000 approx) in financial support to students in partnership with Queen’s, Ulster University, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, NUI Galway and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin.

All scholarship students will be able to participate in community volunteer activities and will receive support throughout their studies from a mentor.

Applications are open from now until Friday, May 27, 2022 for students with a home address in Co. Donegal, who face obstacles to their plans of working in primary or specialised care, or emerging health care technologies.

Pascal McKeown, Head of School and Dean of Education, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast, said that the program would be an opportunity for students “from the Northwest to fulfil their potential.”

“We aim to provide our students with an educational experience that is commensurate with the best universities in the world,” he said.

“We wish to ensure that those who have the ability to benefit from such an education should have the opportunity to do so. This is why we are proud to be a part of the Ireland Health Care Program.”

The scholarship has been announced by not-for-profit organisation The United Health Foundation, part of the UnitedHealth Group (UHG). The aim of the scholarship is to grow the health care workforce across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, building on the success of a 2018 pilot program by Optum Ireland - a leading health services business and member of the UHG.

“The United Health Foundation is committed to helping cultivate a modern, diverse health workforce in Ireland,” said Padraig Monaghan, Managing Director of Optum Ireland and UK. “We are honoured to launch this new scholarship program with Queen’s University Belfast.”

Applicants must have applied for one of the designated undergraduate courses and meet the relevant eligibility criteria. For more information visit -https://www.qub.ac.uk/alumni/IrelandHealthcareScholarshipProgram/
