Campaign Profile – Professor Joe O’Sullivan
In this and subsequent medical ebulletins, researchers involved in Queen’s medical fundraising campaign – and their patients – will be profiled.
Joe O’Sullivan is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Queen’s and a consultant clinical oncologist at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre, Belfast City Hospital. He leads the clinical research programme in prostate cancer and radiotherapy at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB) and the Clinical Cancer Centre.
“I am an academic clinical oncologist with a passion for the treatment of patients with prostate cancer,” said Joe. “I am driven by a desire to improve outcomes from all aspects of this disease and to develop new treatments in particular in the fields of radiation therapy, and bone-seeking radionuclide therapy.”
Professor O’Sullivan first took up post in Queen’s in January 2004 having spent the previous four years working in London. He trained initially in radiation oncology at St Luke's Hospital, Dublin and subsequently completed a research fellowship at the Academic Urology Unit of the world-renowned Royal Marsden Hospital. He was appointed Professor in October 2011.
Currently running a number of clinical trials in Belfast he works closely with scientific colleagues in the CCRCB to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical benefit for patients.
“My research interests include bone-seeking radionuclide therapy, image guided radiotherapy, Irradiation of the retina for Macular Degeneration and translational research in radiation and prostate cancer. I collaborate closely with scientists at the CCRCB, in particular Professor Kevin Prise and Dr David Waugh as well as international colleagues.”
“Since coming to Belfast I have led the development of a team of dedicated researchers committed to excellence in patient care. I am also committed to helping translate scientific discovery into clinical practice and have been instrumental in facilitating a number of translational ideas into clinical trials.”
“I am most proud of establishing an active and successful clinical trial led practice in prostate cancer in Belfast, which I believe has helped to change the culture in oncology and to improve the standard of care delivered to all our patients
