OBE for Queen's medical graduate

Professor Ken Addley has been awarded an OBE (the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Civil Division) in Her Majesty's Birthday Honours List 2015 for services to occupational health.

From Belfast, Ken Addley graduated from Queen’s School of Medicine, MB BCh BAO 1979, MD 2000 and for over 30 years has been an active promoter of employee health and wellbeing in Northern Ireland. He has led many ground-breaking initiatives, developing a specialist expertise in mental health and stress. 

Commenting on his award, Professor Addley said: "I am delighted to be honoured. I believe that this award recognises both the importance of occupational health and the hard work and dedication of many excellent colleagues I have had the opportunity to work with over the years." 

Ken Addley's contribution to furthering occupational health as a discipline spans the professional, academic and voluntary sectors. Currently Director of the Occupational Health Service for the Northern Ireland Civil Service, he is also Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of Management and Leadership at the Ulster Business School.

A former Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, he is a past Chairman of the Northern Ireland Group of the Society of Occupational Medicine. He is also a Visiting Professor to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, UAE, Al Ain.

In 2002 Professor Addley was awarded a post-graduate doctorate degree (MD) from Queen's for research into the determinants and impact of mental health and stress in an occupational setting. His published research interests include ‘Creating healthy workplaces in Northern Ireland’, in addition to quality and team-working, employee well-being and mental health in the workplace. 

Ken Addley lives in Belfast and is married with three daughters and two granddaughters. He is a keen supporter of Ulster Rugby.
