Dr Charles Kenneth Gorman (died 10 May 2017, aged 84)
Dr Kenneth (Ken) Gorman dedicated his life to the study and treatment of diabetes. A Queen’s MB BCh BAO (1956) and PhD graduate (1959), Ken was invited by Dr Charles Best (co-discoverer of insulin) to the University of Toronto to join his research team and undertake his PhD.
Following this, he was accepted to the Joslin Clinic in Boston as a Trainee Fellow in Diabetes. Upon his return to Toronto, Ken earned his Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians; Endocrinology and Internal Medicine.
He was part of the team that planned and built the Scarborough Grace Hospital where he ultimately served a Chief of Staff and Medicine for many years.
A past president of the Canadian Diabetes Association, Ken’s interest in diabetes was also personal. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a two year old and lived unencumbered by the disease for 82 years. In 2015 The Joslin Clinic awarded Ken the Lifetime Achievement Award for living for 80 years with type 1 diabetes. He was one of only five recipients of this medal and the only Canadian recipient.
Ken was married to the late Margaret; he has a son Andrew (daughter-in-law Lovenia) and a daughter Rachel (son-in-law Gavin Harvey). Ken was grandad of Alexandra, Matthew and Sawyer.
