Patrick (Pat) was born in South Wales and educated at Cheltenham College in England. Following graduation from Queen’s University Belfast in 1957, he was houseman at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and following this preregistration year he was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served in Germany, Libya and the UK.
In 1959 he married Hilda Clark, a nurse at the Belfast City Hospital. Together they had 4 children.
Pat retired as a Major in 1968 having received his FFARCS (Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons) and was appointed a consultant anaesthetist in Doncaster.
In 1972 he moved his family to Fredericton, New Brunswick (NB), Canada, where he joined John Price (1955) in a partnership in anaesthesia at the Victoria Public Hospital and later at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, where he was the first Chairman of the department in this new hospital. Queen’s University Belfast was further represented by the addition of 3 more medical graduates, Joseph Gaston (anaesthesia), John Rankin (surgery) and Kurt Atterman (pathology).
Pat continued in active practice in the Fredericton Anaesthesia Associates as a partner until the mid-eighties, when he started the first Chronic Pain Department in the province, becoming a well-recognized specialist in the management of chronic pain, serving as a consultant in many medico-legal cases.
A founding member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Fredericton Patrick participated as a performer and producer of many shows and is well remembered in music circles.
Following his retirement, Hilda and he lived for a few years in St Andrews, NB before finally moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
He is survived by Hilda and by their two sons and two daughters.
