All-Ireland marketing role for Queen's graduate

24 March 2016

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) has appointed Queen’s graduate Carol Magill, previously Head of Government Communications in two Northern Ireland Executive Departments, as the new Network Manager to oversee its activities in Ireland.

Located in Belfast but working across the island, Carol is tasked with driving forward support to members, and developing and representing the marketing profession in Ireland.

With the appointment, the CIM – which has supported marketing professionals for over 100 years – has put in place a dedicated local resource to develop the profession.

Commenting on her new job Carol, who was Deputy Editor of The Gown student newspaper when she studied at Queen’s, said: “I have already met several members of CIM and am keen to meet more to hear their views and insights on how we can grow CIM in Ireland. My first priority is getting in place a robust events programme to assist members to network and learn from best practice and from each other.”

The Network Manager role also includes offering support to businesses across Ireland through CIM’s bespoke in-company training, which has provided support to several international brands including Smiths Industries, EY, 3M and ASDA.

Carol has over 20 years’ experience in communications and marketing, including roles in e-commence, and in government as Head of Communications in the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL), and in Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD). She led the communication activities during the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in Ireland, as well as the policy lead in the consultation and strategy for the Review of Youth Training in Northern Ireland.

“This is a really exciting time to be a marketer. With the increasing importance of digital communication, companies from here – with the right marketing insight – can and do make themselves known on an international scale.”

Speaking to BusinessFirstOnline, Carol added: “CIM has a key role in supporting students and members, and ensuring their skills are at the cutting-edge through accredited training centres, bespoke solutions and ongoing peer support. Ensuring that the training offering is current and effective is reflected in CIM’s support for its new “bite-sized” awards, and mapping its professional qualifications to postgraduate qualifications.

“Marketing is listed in the Department for Employment and Learning’s skills barometer as one of the top ten future requirements, and ensuring Northern Ireland PLC has access to the right marketing people at the right time is key to our economic health.”
