Dr Jeremy Harbison, MSc 1966 (died August 14, 2015)

Dr Jeremy Harbison graduated in Psychology from Queen’s in 1964 and completed a D Phil in the same subject at the University of Ulster in 1983. After a ten year spell as a Clinical and Research Psychologist with Belfast City Hospital and Queen’s he joined the Northern Ireland Civil Service in 1974.

During his civil service career he had senior policy responsibility in a range of areas including health, social care, community relations, urban regeneration and social exclusion, holding the post of Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health and Social services, the Department of the Environment and the Department of Social Development. He retired from the Civil Service in 2001.

Until 2011 Dr Jeremy Harbison was Chair of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, the regulatory body for the social care profession in Northern Ireland, and a board member of the UK Skills for Care and Development sector skills council. He chaired the Council of the University of Ulster for 11 years until his death and was also a Pro-Chancellor of the university.

He is survived by his wife Dame Joan Harbison and one daughter.
