John Gavin Craig, MB BCh BAO 1970 (died 06 July 2015, aged 69)
(A fuller obituary, published on 10 July 2015, can be found in the 'Bradford Telegraph and Argus')
Tributes have been paid to a much-loved family GP and leading Bradford figure, whose death was announced by the medical practice where he worked for almost 40 years.
Born in Shipley in 1946 and educated at Bradford Grammar School, he joined the practice, founded by his father Dr John Craig (also a Queen’s graduate), after studying medicine at Queen's.
After qualifying, Dr Craig spent the next three years working in hospital medicine in Belfast, that period in the early 70s coinciding with the Troubles at their worst. He then transferred to Leeds as a hospital registrar, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians.
Outside of medicine, he had many interests including golf and sailing which led him to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2005. He spent four months sailing four legs – Liverpool to Portugal, Portugal to Brazil, Brazil to the Cape, and the Cape to Australia – as a crew member of The Glasgow.
He was also a past president of Shipley Rotary Club and past president of Bradford Grammar School Old Bradford Association.
Dr Craig is survived by his wife Anita, their four children, Sarah, Patrick, Sam and Hannah, and nine grandchildren.
