James Spiers Nelson (died 19 December 2015, aged 91)
Obituary kindly provided by Jane Nelson (daughter)
James Spiers Nelson (“Jim”) was born in 1924 in Rathfriland, Co Down, and grew up overlooking the Mountains of Mourne.
After his Quaker and Queen’s University Belfast education – he graduated with an MB BCh BAO in 1949 – he went to Nottingham Children’s Hospital, where he met his future wife. He then worked at the City Hospital before going into general practice in a deprived area in 1950. He continued to enjoy working as a GP until he was almost 80 years old.
Jim was president of the Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Society in 1984 and was a police surgeon for 34 years. He was keen on sports of various kinds, but his real love in life was music. Other interests were bridge and travel. Jim always championed the underprivileged, and his patients loved his Irish sense of humour.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, two daughters, six grandchildren, and one great grandson.
