Monsignor Ambrose Macaulay, BA (died 5 November 2019, aged 85)
Monsignor Macaulay was born in Cushendall, one of a family of 10. He attended St Malachy's College in Belfast before beginning his studies for the priesthood at Queen's University. He graduated from Queen’s in 1956 before completing a Licence in Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in 1960 and a Doctorate in Ecclesiastical History at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1963.
Father Ambrose was assistant chaplain in Queen’s from 1964 to 1970, and chaplain from 1970. In 1985 he was appointed parish priest of St Anthony's and later, St Brigid’s until his retirement in 2010.
He was a highly regarded theologian and scholar of ecclesiastical history, and authored a number of books on significant figures and events of church history in Ireland. He also maintained a lifelong interest in Queen's University Gaelic Football Club, and served as Club President for over four decades.
