QGA SUPPORTS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Queen's Graduates' Association (QGA) has added its support to the annual Domino's SU Awards held on Thursday 22 March, by sponsoring the Students' Union President's Award for Student Achievement.

In what has been described as the most glamorous event of the Students’ Union calendar, the Awards showcased and celebrated the work and achievements of Queen’s students across a number of key areas.

In all, 14 Awards were presented including Best Academic Society, Entrepreneurial Student of the Year and Sports Club of the Year. The Students' Union President's Award for Student Achievement recognises a student or group of students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership or have made a positive impact on society at a regional, national or international level.

This year’s President's Award was presented to Queen’s rowers Philip Doyle, Chris Beck and Tiernan Oliver, who helped save the life of Terry Bell who had fallen into the River Lagan during a Lagan Scullers Club river race, on the morning of Saturday 25 November 2017.  

Speaking at the Awards ceremony, Students’ Union President Stephen McCrystall said: “I am truly humbled to award this to not one, not two but three exceptional students, who performed the most courageous example of human kindness, compassion and bravery.”

Association President Fergal McFerran echoed Stephen’s comments saying: “I am incredibly proud that the QGA remains associated with the Students’ Union Awards, recognising the exceptional standard of leadership shown by so many of our current students on a day-to-day basis.

“The actions of Philip, Chris and Tiernan on that day in November is worthy of recognition and reflects the very best values of the Queen’s University community.”

The QGA was established in 2003 following the merger of the Queen's University Association (QUA) and the Queen's Women's Graduates Association. The QUA was founded in 1927 and has been keeping members in touch with one another and with the University for almost 90 years.

The Association organises a varied programme of regular activities throughout the year including talks and visits (mainly in the Belfast area) and University-focused events. The highlight is always the annual 'black tie' Charter Day Dinner in the Great Hall in November which attracts around 100-120 graduates and guests.

The QGA also funds a number of postgraduate scholarships, along with the annual Graduate and Student of the Year Awards.
