Samuel Stuart Brown, MB BCh BAO (Died 24 September 2019, aged 88)

Stuart was born in London but grew up in Belfast, the only son of a well-known family doctor. He was educated at Portora Royal School where he excelled at sports, which he continued at Queen’s making it onto the University Golf team.
After graduation he did his pre-registration, house physician and house surgeon year at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Following a short spell in general practice he decided to specialise in Anaesthetics. During a posting at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children he met his future wife, Joan Lindsay, who was a staff nurse there. His training in Anaesthetics was mainly in Belfast, part of which was doing research with Professor John Dundee, with Registrar posts in Newry, Belfast and then a Consultant post in Omagh.
In 1972 Stuart and Joan and their four sons emigrated to Calgary in Canada where he joined the Anaesthetic staff of the Foothills Hospital and later the Rockyview General Hospital where he remained until his retirement in 2015.
Stuart and Joan moved to a warmer climate on Vancouver Island (Qualicum Beach). Stuart is survived by his wife and three sons, Lindsay, Simon and Roger. Another son Keith predeceased him. Stuart had a very successful life both professionally and personally, a happy marriage of 58 years and loving children. He was well respected by his peers in Calgary. He was a typical 'Ulsterman', hard working, reliable, capable and possessed a good sense of humour.
