Former Student of the Year - Therese White - graduates!

First Trust Bank Queen’s Student of the Year 2011, Therese White, was among several hundred medical and dentistry graduates to cross the stage of the Sir William Whitla Hall on Tuesday 2 July to collect her degree from the University’s Chancellor, His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma.

And Therese has further reason to celebrate as she has been offered an opportunity to return to NASA to participate in further research programmes. In 2011 she assisted with preparations for the Endeavour Space Shuttle's final mission as part of a four-week project. The 24-year-old is one of only two students selected worldwide to have been offered the chance to go back to the USA where she will undertake an aerospace medical placement at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Therese was just one of almost 400 new doctors and dentists who graduated from Queen's this year. Currently at the University, 1,000 staff and postgraduate students from across the world are working to develop new drugs and treatments.

Meanwhile, the University is also creating a new Institute of Health Sciences which will seek to overcome several of the major health problems of our time. As part of the Institute, work is currently under way on a £32m Centre for Experimental Medicine with the aim of finding cures for diabetes and genetic illnesses.
