All aboard for the University Boat Race!

14 May 2015

The Lagan Construction Group University Boat Race will take place on Saturday 6 June 2015 at Cutters Wharf and Belfast Rowing Club.

Now in its eleventh year, the Boat Race is one of the biggest sporting and social events in Belfast, as well as one of the most high-profile rowing competitions in Ireland. As Karl Oakes, Sports Development Manager at Queen's, points out, it’s also a great family occasion.

“Events like the Lagan Construction Group University Boat Race are vital to Belfast and to Northern Ireland, both in terms of helping community spirit and as a magnet for attracting visitors. Rowing is a great spectator event – for all ages – and with a real carnival atmosphere guaranteed there’ll be something for all members of the family to look forward to.”

This year crews from Queen’s and Trinity College Dublin will contest the main university races with additional teams from MCB, RBAI, CAI and Royal Portora making up the schools’ section. With Queen’s enjoying a growing reputation as a rowing force to be reckoned with, some very competitive action can be expected on the River Lagan this year.

And with two enclosures open to the public – and a third available for ticketholders – there will be plenty of vantage points along the route.

The University enclosure at Belfast Rowing Club, which is open to the public, is where crews will launch in and out of, while the public enclosure area at Cutters Wharf, with its free admission, is also likely to prove a popular location on the day.

For those who fancy the ultimate Boat Race experience, a limited number of tickets are available for the VIP enclosure, also at Cutters Wharf. Here guests will get the chance to enjoy the authentic rowing regatta ambiance with a view of finish line, race commentary, a gourmet BBQ and refreshments – plus live jazz entertainment and a DJ – until late in the evening.

The fun kicks off at 10am with the schools’ heats, culminating with the senior finals from 4.30pm, and river tours will be available throughout the day.

In addition to backing from Queen’s and title sponsor Lagan Construction Group, the University Boat Race has also secured support from three other principal partners – Belfast City Council, the Department for Social Development and Lady Victoria Boat Club.

Tickets (priced £25) are available from Queen’s Sport (PEC). For ticket enquiries, please contact Danielle Dunbar on 028 9038 7684.
