JAM AT QUEEN'S HOSTS VIRTUAL SUMMER CONCERT

The Junior Academy of Music (JAM) at Queen's recently celebrated the end of the school year with a virtual summer concert.

The annual end of year concert is usually held in the Whitla Hall at Queen's, however due to the pandemic, the musicians from JAM decided to put together a virtual performance.

Around 120 performers united to perform 'How Can I Keep from Singing?' by Greg Gilpin.

Dr Juliana Licinic Van Walstijn, JAM Music co-ordinator at Queen's University Belfast said: "It started as a simple idea that turned into a challenging but enjoyable project which included around 120 recordings from JAM pupils (age 5-18), our tutors, several JAM parents, a number of Queen's staff and some JAM parents-musicians.

"The performances were individually recorded and carefully assembled by the JAM 4 Creative Music Technology specialists, Oisin Hughes and Koichi Samuels, and our choir director Anne McCambridge, to produce the final performance.

"We were delighted that everyone was able to take part and the final video performance is an uplifting, true record of JAM's vitality and ongoing creativity which continues to stand out, even during COVID-19. We hope everyone enjoyed the performance from home and got to sing along."

The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has previously awarded £14,760 to JAM at Queen’s, to fund bursaries over the next three years for their new Strings programme. Additional funding has also been provided by the Music for All programme to purchase new string instruments.
